N-tier Applications

In two tier architecture commonly known as client/server architecture, client manages the user interface, server manages the database and business logic can be run either on client or the server. Two-tier architecture is a fine solution for developers but when we talk in terms of maintenance, performance, scalability, processing and flexibility; it is not a reliable architecture.

Finally, to overcome the limitations of 2 tier architecture and structuring software systems; n-tier architecture came into existence with its much wider and consistent terms. N-tier applications or architecture involves splitting the two tier architecture into multiple tiers wherein the presentation layer, dynamic layer, business logic and database access runs on separate layers allowing each layer to perform the specific job. For example, allowing a Web server to serve Web-pages, an application server to serve applications, and a database server to serve databases.
